Terrain Photography - A Home Studio

When Overlord posted these stunning images on our forum they prompted the question: "Do you have a whole photographic studio at home?", so Overlord decided to send us a photo of his 'studio':

Points to notice:

  1. Overlord has used a single large sheet of paper for a background and floor for his 'studio' this eliminates corners and gives a nice clean background that will not distract from the subject of the photos. Note that it has been attached to something with bulldog clips but could just as easily have been attached to a wall.

  2. In the foreground, standing on a pile of books, is Overlords tripod. The camera is not currently upon it as Overlord is using the camera to take this photo. Note that it is not the super-duper-mega-expensive variety but still provides a means of setting everything up so that the camera's timer, a fairly standard feature, can be used to trigger the shutter release; thus eliminating any possibility of camera shake.

  3. The subject is lit with three desk lamps. The two in the foreground light the subject while the fluorescent lamp in the background lights the background (resulting in the blue tint that we see in the final images).

  4. An assortment of books and other objects have been used for the subject, lamps and camera to stand on in order to get them to the correct heights.

The moral of this story must surely be that where there is a will, there is a way. Clean backgrounds and multiple light sources are essential for good indoor miniature photography however Overlord has demonstrated how this can be achieved withough shelling out a small fortune on a professional setup. Indeed he has done it using items that the vast majority of us already have in our homes.
