Modular Trench Boards - Part 3

by Gary James
Most of the hills and crags we use as gamers are mere bumps when compared to the real thing. We decided to make some high crags to add a bit of depth and perspective to the boards.

Making the crags

The crags are made from styrofoam (surprise!). We just cut the triangular crag shape out of the foam, and made two or three smaller versions to glue onto each side. The largest crag, above, is made from five triangles fastened together with cocktail sticks and PVA glue. They are then sliced into mercilessly with a sharp craft knife to add the crevices and cracks. When the glue had dried we covered them with the same textured paint as the boards, and them painted them up in exactly the same finish.

Making the battlefield barriers

White Dwarf magazine carried an article on making these barriers. They are just a small base with bits glue-gunned onto them. We used Necromunda bulkheads sawn into pieces, oil drums cut in half, left-over vehicle bits, wheels and anything else that we could scrounge.
The bases were finished with the same textured paint, and the bits sprayed black and then drybrushed.

The finished effect

The finished boards looked like this. In the last instalment I'll show you some pictures of the boards in use.
