Neal's Hill with Cliff was created by nealcrankshaw for our Obstacles Competition.
My entry is a simple stepped hill with some fairly steep sides that have been classed as cliffs. The entire hill would classify as difficult terrain and the cliffs would be impassable terrain.
The hill was first carved and shaped from polystyrene and then coated with a thin layer of Polyfilla. Then blobs of Polyfilla were then textured using a bit of tinfoil that had been crumpled and then uncrumpled.
I wanted to go for as realistic a colour scheme as possible, so grey was banned.
1) Undercoat of dark brown.
2) Washes of red brown, olive drab, mid brown and blue-brown, applied in splotches.
3) Drybrush with khaki, lightened with khaki + white.
4) Final wash into certain crevices with black+brown .
The rest of the piece was then covered with sand and finally the sand was covered with flock and a few bits of greenery were added.
This was a relatively straightforward project made interesting by trying out a technique I had heard of but never seen (texturing wet Polyfilla with tinfoil).
